The event (which is funded by Fenland District Council and Roddons Housing Estate) will raise the profile of environmental issues in Fenland.
We will be looking at recycling, measuring our carbon footprint, how we can get more active in the community, how we can build breathing spaces in our communities and how we can live more healthy lives.
We will also be looking at animal habitats and how we can help encourage wildlife into the area.
Fenland District Council will also be leading on a street-pride clean up session to help make a difference to the local environment in the Waterlees estate.

COMPOST BONANZA…
National Compost Awareness week is being celebrated across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough from 4th to 10th May. The week, which is being supported by celebrity gardeners Charlie Dimmock and Matt James, aims to increase public awareness of the benefits of home composting and the use of peat-free compost.
Home composting is still one of the best ways to help the environment on a daily basis, and is a habit that can be quickly incorporated into your regular kitchen and garden routines. You can compost much more than just grass cuttings and old tea bags. You can add clippings and prunings from garden plants, fruit and vegetable peelings from the kitchen, and other items such as ripped-up egg boxes, egg-shells and coffee grounds.
Composting at home is a great way of providing a free, nutrient-rich fertiliser for your garden – but it’s also an easy way to do your own bit for the environment. Biodegradeable garden and kitchen waste that is put in with the general rubbish, gets sent to landfill and rots down to produce methane. Methane gas contributes significantly to climate change, and has been shown to be over 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
Making compost to use at home benefits your garden in many ways. It helps to improve the structure and fertility of the soil, which boosts plant growth. Using your own compost can also help to attract wildlife to your garden, including birds and hedgehogs, which feed off the worms in your soil and compost. It will also save you money, as you won’t need to drive to the garden centre to purchase compost as often.
Events are happening across the region during Compost Awareness Week. RECAP (Recycling in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough) will be giving away free compost donated by Donarbon Ltd of Waterbeach.
Volunteer Master Composters will be on hand to provide advice about how to make compost at home, and can also help if your existing compost heap or bin isn’t working properly. Come along and find out more about how you can benefit the environment – locally and globally.
Events taking place throughout the region are as follows:
Chatteris - Co-op supermarket, Bridge Street, Tues 6th May from 10am to 4pm
March - City Road Car Park, Weds 7th May from 10am to 4pm
Cambridge - Beehive Centre car park Thurs 8th May from 10am to 3pm
Cambourne - Morrisons car park Friday 9th May from 10am to 3pm
Whittlesey - East Gate car park, Friday 9th May from 10am to 2pm
