Historical Context - Background on CCORRN

CCORRN is a partnership between the community, public and private sector that was started in early 2003. Financial support was awarded to Cambridgeshire County Council for its establishment, from DEFRA's Recycling Challenge Fund and Enventure.

CCORRN's goal when incepted was to successfully increase the quantity of community reuse and recycling projects in the County. CCORRN is now a Company Limited by Guarantee with its Directors made up of volunteers from all the sectors involved. One full time staff member is employed as the 'Community Recycling Network Organiser' to carry out the work programme set by the Management Committee.

In the second year 2004, the network continued to build upon the first year's success. This included providing 'Seedcorn' funding for project start ups as well as holding events, workshops and visits to allow the dissemination of knowledge and best practice. By assisting groups in defining/developing and bid writing they were able to secure additional funding to develop and expand their operations.

Commissioned a bulky waste survey on current practice by all the District Councils in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Unitary Authority.

Other consultancy included employing Richard Mehmed from the National Community Wood Recycling Project to undertake a feasibility study for Fenland Area Community Enterprise Trust (FACET) into wood recycling as a social enterprise activity. This has resulted in this activity going live.

DEFRA EAF - joint bid with the Association of Charity Shops and ECORRN successful. £111,000 over three years to promote the campaign Choose2Reuse that CCORRN created.

Assistance to Cambridgeshire County Council with WIP LASU funding bid element on bulky waste analysis and community sector opportunities in diverting bulky waste - application successful - work completed by end of March by consultant.

Change Up Project - This project seeks to identify opportunities, instigate relationships and build infrastructure between community groups and companies to divert waste and create new opportunities for sustainable products and services for the community sector to deliver.

Full circle development - New Development Officer Nikki DiGiovanni (a CCORRN member was appointed 1st of May 2006) said "The next two years represent many challenges and pitfalls for CCORRN and its members with new and tighter legislation, the emergence of a more integrated waste strategy, national and local government pressures and priorities it has never been more important to strategise".
