There are five district councils and one unitary authority (Peterborough) in Cambridgeshire. They are all responsible for domestic household collections and recycling.
In 1999 the district councils, Peterborough unitary authority and the County Council joined together with the Environment Agency in a joint initiative to develop a Municipal Waste Management Strategy. The object of this approach was to develop ways of working more closely to solve waste issues over the next 20 years.
Working in partnership, the local authorities for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have successfully achieved a recycling rate of 25%, making them one of the best in the Country. However Government has sent them ambitious recycling target of 34% by 2004.
Joint working is crucial if we are to achieve the recycling rate that is set for 2004. With the community sector working in partnership with the local authorities this can be achieved.
All the local authorities have sections responsible for waste management and have a dedicated recycling or waste minimisation officer.
