The Big Womble - 29th October 2008 - Wimbledon College
Raising money and the profile of Re-use.
The Wombles are famous children’s’ TV characters from the 1970s and 1990s which “Made good use of the things that we find”.
The FRN has secured the rights to use the Womble name to run a national day focussed on re-use. We see this as a great opportunity to raise funds for the FRN and its members and to raise the profile of the work that you all do. The activities planned are as follows:
1) A national raffle of celebrity household goods. The FRN is currently seeking donations of household items from celebrities from the worlds of music, sport, TV and more. Some of these items will become raffle prizes. Tickets will be distributed to FRN members wishing to participate. The income from the sales of tickets will be split between the project selling them and the FRN. The FRN will publicise the tickets outlets to fan websites so that people interested in the items know where they can buy them. We will set up a page on the FRN website detailing the projects that hold tickets.
2) An auction of items not in the raffle on the day of the Big Womble at Wimbledon College. This will be a ticket only event and we will be seeking corporate attendances to ensure that bids bring in a significant amount of money.
3) We will be encouraging organisations to run local events and invite the local media in the week of the Big Womble. We are keen to see awareness raising and fundraising activity across the UK.
These events will be used to raise the profile of furniture and other re-use to both the media and the general public. We are hoping to attract significant support and make this a really successful event. The FRN will use the money it raises to support its social and anti-poverty work. If the exercise raises more money than is required for this we intend to set up a fund to assist projects in their own work on areas such as starter packs, working with excluded volunteers or providing free furniture to destitute households. We are fairly open about this, anything that is not about waste!
How do I get involved?
If you want to sell raffle tickets or run a local event please let us know – email me at pauls@frn.org.uk. We will publicise both through our national promotional work and our website.
If you have contacts with any celebrities that you think would be interested please get in touch.
